– for those in the know, it is an modern adaption of a 19th century cartoon (which I fail to find back in my collection of geo-political cartoons) of Queen Victoria rowing away, in the British Isles drawn as a rowing boat, from the continent)

Coalitions, alliances, fractions and factions all weaponed, all fighting and infighting for ‘their cause’ have taken over the whole of Syria with the non-combatant population, civilians, caught in between all these belligerents, and with the daily changes of battle frontiers not knowing anymore which way to flee. Is it safer in the territory of the enemy of your enemy, are those who say they are your friends really friends?

I take this daily note on the battlefront from a source that certainly is a partisan view, as objectivity has long been lost in this raging Civil War. What is conveyed is clear enough, it points to the structural dilemma of those caught in between many fires, with changing winds spreading the fire one day this way, the other day in reversed direction.

SYRIA: EVERYONE LOSES – EVERYTHING LOST

… nothing is gained be it with hand weapons on the ground or with planes bombing from the air – territory won yesterday is lost tomorrow – communities are destroyed – great powers are powerless – local powers are reckless – those who have fled will be hated for it by those who stayed behind… later.

Does it still matter what the captions of these photographs are? The role of perpetrator and victim are dynamically reversed in civil wars even more so with this war that has become at the same time a ‘proxy war’ between world powers and their shifting local alliances.

One century after the (secret) carve up of the Ottoman Empire, including (nowadays) Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel/Palestine, in the Sykes-Picot Agreement worked out by the colonial powers of France and Britain with the assistance of Tsarist Russia (also a colonial power be it continental eastward)… one century later this dirty colonial deal still casts it’s shadow over the region.

Instead of a ‘common wealth’ of the Levant, there is ‘common misery’ produced by all those who still try to grab territory and power for themselves, with the exclusion of those classified as ‘others’. As always religious, ethnic and ideological differences are wrenched into levellers of dominion. Sunni, Shia, Christian, Jews. Kurds, Druze, Armenians, Israeli, Palestinians. Zionism, salafism, jihadism, wahhabism, name it… false ‘common causes’ that by their idea of ‘primacy’ of one particular cause over others, neglect the rights of all those human beings that do not fit the ideological or religious labels that are imposed.

Both Britain and France have been bombing what they saw as insurgents against their power in the twenties and thirties of last century. (1) The Brits called it ‘policing from the air’ and now they do the same with a new type of insurgents that has been bred in the cauldron of geo-politics – the Middle East – and spreads far beyond: ISIS.

No democracy will be brought about by bombs, thrown by hand or from the air. Destroying the bases of ISIS means at the same time destroying all of the territory where they reign. Not just ISIS offices, barracks, weapon depots, vehicles, fuel, but also the amenities of those terrorised by ISIS. Will people embrace these “forces of liberation” that killed (collateral or not) and destroyed their neighbourhoods? The same goes for areas under control of whatever temporary warlords, many spending more energy on in-fighting than opposing the official Syrian regime.

If air power could do anything, than it should be under joint United Nations command, imposing a full fledged no-flying zone and employing at the same time an international UN ground force. No more strafing bombing missions, neither by USA, NATO, Russia, Turkey (in their no-NATO role), Assad forces, and so on.

PEACE IS DELIVERED FROM THE AIR be it in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya by all the world and local power air forces and when it rains down on the ground and people, be they terrorists, or collateral victims, be they combatants or non-combatants, civilians or non-civilians, women and children, elderly or in their prime age, they will be left with destruction and death and from a safe distance this truth is calling us:

It is a sentence from an academic study on aerial bombardment and how come that we fail to classify aerial bombardment as an act of state-terror:

“Strategic terror: the politics and ethics of aerial bombardment” by Beau Grosscup, published in the year 2006.

It is one of many studies on the failure of aerial bombardment as a means to bring peace. I selected a series of citations from this book and will spread it for weeks to come, to help raising a debate, where there hardly is one. A debate on the futile strategy of high technology thrown from the sky that is thought of puting an end to war and misery. It is a call to start thinking and overcome the lethargy of so many people who are citizens of countries that do participate in throwing even more bombs onto scenes of high conflict, like the actual bombardments in Syria and Iraq. We see demonstrations for or against the streams of refugees produced by this type of ‘peace settlements’ that come from these war zones. We have seen tens of thousands in our streets demonstrating against horrible terrorist attacks in our own cities, but we see no demonstrations against aerial bombardments, by whoever claiming to end violence by perpetrating it. “Theoretically, for strategic bombers of whatever stripe, the distinction between civilian and military targets does not ‘strategically’ exist since the Geneva Accords permit tactics deemed militarily necessary to win. Thus when the distinction is trumpeted it usually is at the start of a war and obviously done for political convenience and advantage. Yet, the longer a conflict persists, the pressure increases on the military command to produce a victory. The result has been a pattern in which over the course of any war, any pretense of a distinction between military and civilian targets is dropped. Direct bombing of civilians in their neighborhoods, villages, homes, schools, hospitals, shopping malls and religious sites occurs to the point where indiscriminate or wanton carpet bombing in ‘free fire zones’ ‘boxes’ or ‘areas’ containing entire villages has become the norm. The US military reportedly continued this tradition in Operation Matador, the bombing of Iraqi villages into rubble on the Iraq–Syria border in mid-May 2005.” [Ibid.; p. 180.]

“The second premise pertains to the issue of intent. Throughout the history of strategic bombing the mantra has been ‘Civilians become casualties because terrorists intend them to’ or ‘Conversely, civilians die from our bombs but it is not our intention.’ They are all ‘targeting mistakes’ or, as Ted Koppel likes to say, ‘the unfortunate accidents of war.’8 Yet, by the very strategy and weaponry they choose to prosecute war, the strategic bombers know they will kill and injure many civilians. For example, purposely targeting military targets in urban or congested areas is standard practice in contemporary bombing campaigns. Even doing so as precisely as possible, the imprecision of precision bombing, together with the level of dispersion and lethality of modern ordnance, guarantees that civilian casualties will occur.” [Ibid.; p. 180.]

“In the same breath with which they utter their ‘no intent’ disclaimer, bombing planners announce their intention to minimize civilian casualties. They repeatedly and proudly do so under the presumption that in war minimizing civilian deaths is the ‘best one can expect.’ Purportedly, this ‘truth’ sets them apart from terrorists, and is therefore a laudable goal. Yet, implicit in the intent to minimize civilian casualties is the intent to cause civilian casualties. If this were not so, announcing the intent to try and minimize civilian casualties would make no sense. It does become logical if the real intent behind the strategic bombers’ declaration is to seek political and moral advantage, particularly over those assumed to be intending to ‘maximize’ civilian casualties. It may be the distinction between those who say they intend to minimize civilian casualties and those who don’t say it that helps to separate terrorism from other forms of violence. But this is not a delineation the strategic bombers make.” [Ibid.; p. 181.1.]

“To say that the civilian deaths from aerial bombardment are unintentional is sophistry, because if there is a probability that the bombs will hit civilian targets, then ipso facto the civilian deaths are not unintentional. This is tantamount to saying that a drunk driver who did not intend to kill someone in an ‘accident’ should be set free for lacking of such intention … aerial bombardment always already intends to kill civilians, despite the best intentions of military planners.” [Ibid.; p. 181.2.]

“Since Vietnam, the bombing nations and the United States in particular have also been intent on obfuscating the numbers of enemy civilian casualties, as in ‘it is our intention not to do body counts.’ Invoking a multi-faceted system of rationales indicates a determined intent to escape the terrorism label. Finally, the strategic bombers have always intended to conduct ‘precision’ bombing, an intention not yet realized. Still, the intent remains and in the continuing experiment to determine if air power alone can win wars, it is intended and expected civilians will continue to die.” [Ibid.; p. 184.]

“In a climate in which terrorism is such a ‘politically loaded’ concept, so vulnerable to manipulation, and with great potential to separate self and other on moral terms, it make sense for those who dominate the discourse to seek advantage. Indeed, the great lengths to which the strategic bombers go to escape the terrorism label underscores the political nature of their mission. In this regard, the Bush Administration’s War on Terrorism is the latest example of a bombing nation seeking to monopolize the terrorism discourse in order to give political cover to its own terrorism. Other national leaders from across the political spectrum understand this and have raced to be on the ‘right’ side of President Bush’s constructed political divide between ‘us’ and the ‘terrorists.’ As always, in this ‘war’ being on the ‘right’ side means colluding with the powerful, seeking political shelter from their wrath until a shift in the power dynamics provides room for independent or oppositional positioning. Like the USA, the other members of the current ‘family of nations’ and their often troublesome ‘second cousins’ such as Pakistan, China, India and Indonesia also have a policy of state terror, one increasingly implemented through strategic bombing. They are the same nations who then cry ‘foul’ or ‘terrorism’ when others follow their example.” [Ibid.; p. 186.]

“Taking this approach is particularly useful when considering aspects of strategic bombing. First, it means understanding that anyone can dismiss civilian bombing deaths as ‘unintended loss of life,’ ‘accidents’ and ‘mistakes.’ It means knowing that anyone can claim the other side is terrorist while the bombing self is not. Most important, it means comprehending that the validity of both above claims does not necessarily depend on any factual basis. Nor does it depend on whether the results of the West’s ‘precision’ bombing are any different from the other side’s terrorism. In the end, what passes as ‘truth’ depends upon who can enforce their political agenda, their denials and claims in public discourse and public policy. Throughout the course of their strategic bombing, the Western ‘family of nations’ has been doggedly successful at doing just that. Second, it must be decided if the distinction between terrorism and strategic bombing that rests on direct versus indirect targeting is meaningful and to whom? If it is not meaningful to the thousands of bombing victims and millions more who are potential victims, then what is the point of insisting on a distinction that is fraudulent to a majority of fellow human beings just for short-term political advantage?” [Ibid.; p. 188.1.]

“Finally, the issue is not whether war causes civilian casualties. It does and with the lethality and dispersion effects of air power and the changing nature of war itself, civilian casualties are likely to increase rather than diminish.28 Indeed, it may be that ‘war is terrorism’ and any distinction between the two should be abandoned. This is unlikely to happen so long as the powerful, particularly the bombing nations, profit politically, morally and militarily from the distinction. Maybe the best that is possible at this time is to do what this book attempts, to chip away at the Western monopoly on the terrorism discourse, hoping to expose the dangerous deceptions upon which it is based.” [Ibid.; p. 188.2.]

“Too many citizens and powerful elites are wedded to the imperial and privileged mantra that ‘might makes right’ and view the world through the lens of the ‘good versus evil’ or ‘self/other’ divide. Unless their worldview is challenged with purpose and effect, the destiny of the human condition will remain firmly in the hands of strategic bombers who are under strict instruction from their political mentors to do ‘whatever it takes.’ For certain, that means a future in which more strategic terror will rain from the sky.” [Ibid.; p. 190.]

EASY AIRBNB BOMBARDEMENT = VERVELEND maar geen reden tot ingrijpen volgens Wethoudster Katja Ollongren van D66 (onthoudt die naam voor de volgende gemeenteraadsverkiezingen)

“Wethouder Kajsa Ollongren (Luchthaven) kent het probleem, maar ziet volgens haar woordvoerder geen reden om in te grijpen. ‘Zeker als het vliegverkeer boven de stad langer aanhoudt, is dat heel vervelend. Maar dit gebruik valt binnen de afspraken.’ Handhaving van het vliegverkeer en de zeggenschap over het luchtruim is overigens een zaak van het rijk, niet van gemeentes.”

In het Parool van vandaag… en jazeker rondom Haarlem zijn ze slechter af en ook Almere mag meegenieten met deze toename van mobiliteit… enkel Amsterdam krijgt in het kielzog van de tegen de wind laverende vliegmachines ook nog de invasie van de rolkofferaars te verwerken… en de stoonde huurfietser colonnes.

Dank nog aan vriendinnen & vrienden die dit spandoek ondersteunden, je ziet dat het keurig bewaakt werd afgelopen zaterdagmiddag…

Er waren nogal wat opmerkingen over het woord PERFIDE (1) als zijnde in ongebruik geraakt… maar ik weet wel zeker dat degene die het niet wisten het aan anderen gevraagd hebben… zo kan een PEGIDA aanhanger gedacht hebben dat PERFIDE een soort scheldwoord was of een ‘seksuele perversie’ inhield… je wil per slot toch weten waar een ander je voor uitmaakt….

Ik kan er wel op wijzen dat ook in het PEGIDA kamp er onbegrijpelijke leuzen voor ongeletterden werden meegevoerd zoals “LET’S ORBANIZE” een verwijzing naar de Hongaarse harde-lijn-premier Viktor Orban (1963-) die begon met het omzomen met prikkeldraad van zijn land en vluchtelingen zo snel mogelijk over de Hongaarse landsgrenzen wist weg te duwen. Eenvoudiger was natuurlijk het door weinigen opgemerkte demonstratiebord “TOKKIE POWER” en dat lijkt mij een goede aanduiding voor PEGIDA aanhangers… de kwalificatie FASCISTEN is voor het merendeel van de aanhangers van deze beweging overdreven.

Wel was het scanderen van de afkortingen voor rechtse partijen en groeperingen te horen, zoals “PVV, PVV, PVV” en het minder bekende “DTG, DTG, DTG.” Het is de gelegenheidsgroep ‘Demonstranten Tegen Gemeente’, een mobiele brigade tegen opvangcentra, met een pitbull als symbool. Die een Facebook-aanhang van niets over de duizend heeft. (2)

Verwarrend was dit spandoek waarop een omcirkelde A (gangbaar symbool van hedendaagse anarchisten en autonomen) te zien was, maar met een leuze die daar niet bij leek te passen, temidden van het samengedreven PEGIDA groepje bij de Blauwe Brug.

Het gaat om de ‘Autonome Nationalisten’ een groepering actief in Duitsland, Engeland, alsook Vlaanderen, die een deel van het gedachtengoed van de West-Duitse ‘Autonomen-beweging uit de tachtiger jaren, alsook de symbolen heeft overgenomen. In Nederland nu een jaar of tien actief. Op een gegeven moment verdween dit spandoek weer schielijk… was het door de orde-dienst van PEGIDA, ik weet het niet. Ondanks dit alles lijk mij de kwalificatie ‘fascisten’ niet juist. Het meeliften met de stroom van een (nieuwe) beweging is een aspect dat in iedere sociale beweging voorkomt, of dat nu gaat om links, rechts, midden, religieus of atheïstisch.  (3)

Het was ook de zwakte van de tegen-demonstranten om PEGIDA enkel met anti-fascistische leuzen aan te roepen en geen duidelijkheid te scheppen over waarom die vluchtelingen vluchten. Heel verwonderlijk bleef de oorsprong van de asiel-kwestie, de moorddadige (burger)-oorlogen in het Midden Oosten, geheel en al buiten beschouwing bij beide partijen. Althans bij hun publieke manifestatie. In PEGIDA teksten valt wel te lezen dat Moslim-fundamentalisten, ISIS-aanhangers zich verbergen in de vluchtelingenstromen en hun onderlinge strijd hier in Europa door willen zetten. Dat is nog gerekend buiten het algemene standpunt van PEGIDA tegen wat zij als ‘het gevaar van de islamisering van Europa’ zien.

Op een gegeven moment,op het eind van de middag, was de harde-kern van de Anti-PEGIDA demonstranten even klein was als die van PEGIDA… Aan iedere kant zo’n honderd… met daartussen meer dan één paardenkop (indachtig het kwantitatief gezegde ‘anderhalve man en een paardenkop’). Op een gegeven moment was de politie de grootste partij van het straatceremonieel.

De kwaliteit van de AT5 journalisten droeg ook niet bij aan het krijgen van enig inzicht. Zo lieten de journalisten na de PEGIDA demonstranten te vragen naar de uitleg van de naam van hun beweging… ik denk dat velen dat niet echt weten en zeker niet begrijpen: Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes (PEGIDA), in het Nederlands: “Patriottische Europeanen tegen de islamisering van het Avondland”. Wel leuk was een korte vraag van een AT5 journalist aan een PEGIDA demonstrant waarom die daar nu stond, waarop het antwoord kwam: “Voor de mening van vrijheidsuiting.”

Ik heb ook geen vragen aan deelnemers uit het ander kamp gehoord, zoals “Hoe weet u zo zeker dat die mensen daar aan de andere kant fascisten zijn?”
Ik pleit ervoor dat op de komende redactievergadering van AT5 daar nog eens flink geëvolueerd wordt, want met die paar uur live-televisie is journalistiek gesproken weinig of niets gedaan.

Sociologische interesse dreef mij ertoe om het pro-PEGIDA wat verder te bestuderen. De web-ste Geen stijl is daarvoor een goede bron. Heb dus mijn citaten-systeem losgelaten op de GEEN STIJL pagina over de PEGIDA demo in Amsterdam afgelopen zaterdag…

Ik koos uit 1025 reacties – chronologisch met tijdcode geordend – 50 citaten. Dat lijkt veel 1025 reacties, maar daar zitten ook een heel aantal ‘blogger-tijgers’ bij, zoals: Mastermattie (72x); Basil Fawlty (46x); reaguurbot (31x); SyntaxError (21x) Blowing Bubbels (20x)…. De meeste ‘reageerders’ op Geen Stijl lijken mij ook in-de-luie-stoel-voor-de-televisie reacties te geven op de live feed van AT5 en andere lokale zenders uit de regio, ‘armchair activists’ heet dat in het Engels.

Opvallend is dat er weinig tot geen melding gemaakt wordt van het feit (geobserveerd vanuit mijn raam recht er tegenover) dat de ME/Politie/Stillen vooral bij het Anti-Fascistsiche ‘cordon’ hun arrestaties verrichten.

De PEGIDA groep stond geheel omsloten door de ME eerst bij het baksteebtje pleintje vlak bij de metro-uitgang en later afgekalfd bijeengedreven op de oprit naar de Blauwe Brug. De Anti-Pegida demonstraten was nog een min-of-meer vrije uitloop gegund richting Mozes & Aaron kerk, dus het is begrijpbaar dat daar meer waaghalzen waren die iets deden of wellicht enkel van zins leken te gaan doen… het was (ik keek er van boven af op) vreemd te zien hoe het arrestatieteam (van die mannen met semi-bivakmutsen op en jekkertjes) moeiteloos enkelingen uit de toch al dunne AntiPegida gelederen plukten. De uiteindelijke vangst was dacht ik 20. Op het hoogtepunt moeten er zo’n 200 PEGIDA en een zelfde aantal anti_PEGIDA demonstranten geweest zijn + een honderdtal agenten in uniform en burger (ik reken de rugdekkingstroepen bij de Mozes & Aaron kerk daar ook bij). Nog geen 5% arrestaties.

De slachtoffer rol die de ‘reageerders’ op de Geen Stijl web-site benadrukken, dient in die zin gerelativeerd te worden.

Ik heb zelf (met een uitzicht naar alle kanten van het demonstratiepodium) uiteindelijk weinig of geen echt geweld gezien. Doorde politiemobilisatie, de blaffende honden en af en toe een vuurwerkknalltje lijkt er nog wel wat aan de hand te zijn, maar veel had het toch niet om het lijf. Wel was er een dramatisch ogend kort moment van een charge met paarden tegen de achtergrond van een oranje rookbom, maar die was binnen de kortst mogelijke keren weer over.

Wat betreft het vuurwerk en een enkele (oranje) rookbom die gegooid werden, die kwamen denk ik niet enkel uit het AntiFa-kamp. Een vriend van mij plaatste bij mijn artikeltje op mijn web-blog deze observatie:

“de pegida-groep bestond uit verschillende groepjes…in de jodebreestraat had zich een 15-tal kaalkoppen verzameld, van het waterlooplein dook opeens een groepje met nederlandse vlaggen, zwaar vuurwerk gooiend naar de politie=paarden, op etc.”

Ik heb dat groepje met hun nationale driekleur al leuzen schreeuwend op het podium zien verschijnen en ook vuurwerk geluid gehoord op hetzelfde moment…. Wellicht was dat de DTG-Nederland groep, de mobiele brigade tegen vluchtelingen centra (Demonstranten Tegen Gemeente) die een bulldog als symbool hebben… er werd op een gegeven moment ook “DTG, DTG, DTG” gescandeerd bij de marmmeren schaamschotten van de STOPera…

Interessant is het ledenoverzicht van de Publieksgroep op Facebook DTG, waarbij Danny Hoffmann de centrale figuur lijkt te zijn, met logo’s en avatars onder meer geïnspireerd op de Tempeliers en de groepscule ‘Kameraadschap Noord Nederland” die twee elkaar kruisend bijlen als wapenschild voeren… “Sociaal gaat alleen Nationaal” is hun motto, de basis is Oude Pekela en het vriendenaantal op Facebook is 133 precies.

“PEGIDA NEDERLAND” vecht voor het behoud van ONZE CULTUUR EN ONZE WESTERSE WAARDEN.

Beste Mensen Wij hebben jullie hulp nodig… Pegida Nederland is een protestbeweging Pegida, voluit de Patriottische Europeanen tegen de Islamisering van het Avondland (Europa), ontstond een jaar geleden in de Oost-Duitse stad Dresden. Daar komen wekelijks duizenden mensen bijeen om hun ongenoegen samen vreedzaam te uiten. Pegida Nederland is tegen islamisering en de komst van (economische) vluchtelingen. Europa wordt bedreigd door een massale toestroom van mensen, dat is de realiteit. Er zullen nog tientallen miljoenen vluchtelingen volgen , nu hebben we het over honderdduizenden, volgend jaar hebben we het over miljoenen. En het einde is niet in zicht.

De samenleving in vele landen raakt verstoord omdat 90% van alle naar Europa stromende vluchtelingen, asielzoekers en immigranten mensen met het islamitisch geloof. Maar om de “vredelievende religie” niet te irriteren doen de regeringen in Europa al jaren alsof er niets aan de hand is en heeft men daarmee de rode loper uitgelegd voor infiltratie, dreiging en dominantie van de militante islam. Daarom strijden wij van Pegida Nederland tegen de islamisering van Nederland en Europa.

Maatschappelijke organisaties zetten Pegida weg als een extreme beweging , maar DIT is absoluut niet aan de orde wij zullen er dan ook voor zorgen dat “PEGIDA NEDERLAND” blijft vechten voor het behoud van ONZE CULTUUR EN ONZE WESTERSE WAARDEN. In vele lagen van de bevolking komt het ongenoegen steeds meer naar boven maar deze kunnen vaak niet door hun functies in bedrijven of zaken hun onvrede uiten op demonstraties. Juist van deze mensen vragen wij financiële hulp om onze boodschap te kunnen blijven verkondigen. Spijtig genoeg kost alles geld in deze wereld en omdat wij dezelfde doelen voor ogen hebben als vele andere Nederlanders om “een vrij Nederland te behouden ”is het noodzakelijk dat wij om donaties vragen. Waaraan u o.a. moet denken, spandoeken,vlaggen,flyers,informatie materialen en voor gerechtelijke kosten. Onze tijd en moeite stoppen wij hier gratis in.

Voor alle duidelijkheid ik maak zelf niet de simplificatie die de aanhangers van deze beweging gelijk stelt met neo-nazis.

Grote migratiestromen – door het geheel van de tijd – zijn het product van ongewenste toestanden ‘elders’ en brengen problemen ‘hier’ met zich mee. Vaak is er echter een oorzakelijk verband tussen de toestand ‘elders’ en ‘hier’.

De PEGIDA beweging in Duitsland en nu ook hier reageert daarop, want er zijn natuurlijk sociale en economische gevolgen. Echter hun argumentatie is ‘perfide’  – 1) Door en door vals 2) Eerloos 3) Laag 4) Leugenachtig 5) Onbetrouwbaar 6) Slecht 7) Trouweloos 8) Verraderlijk 9) Vals 10) Verraderlijk – door de algemeen bestaande angst voor de terreur van moslim fundamentalisten te vermengen met het sociaal en economisch – lokaal – ervaren ongemak van het verlenen van gastvrijheid aan mensen die het oorlogsgeweld in hun land ontvluchten.

Dat het hier om mensen uit een gebied gaat waar het moslim-fundamentalisme slechts één van de elementen van het conflict vormt; dat het gaat om mensen die een gebied ontvluchten waar in de periode 2011-2016 het dodental geschat wordt te liggen tussen de 150.000 en 300.000; dat niet hun geloofsopvatting, maar hun medemens zijn het meest telt, dat wordt bewust door PEGIDA ontkent.

Daarom zijn de argumenten van PEGIDA = PERFIDE.

Het eeuw-feest van de destijds geheime overeenkomst tussen de Westerse grootmachten (inclusief Rusland) over de verdeling van het Midden-Oosten-Wingewest  na het verval van het Ottomaanse rijk, het Sykes-Picot verdrag van 1916, sneed dat werelddeel in stukken die nog steeds voedingsbodem voor economische, religieuze en politieke wedijver zijn.

De decennia lange  ‘entente’ met dictatoriale regimes in het Midden Oosten van de nieuwe grootmachten na WWII  werpen nu de wrange vruchten af. Niemand die zich bekommerde om de grootse landoorlog na WWII tussen Iran en Irak in de periode 19080-1988 waarbij 1,6 miljoen mensen om het leven kwamen. Geen demonstraties met een roep om vrede. Geen vluchtelingenstromen hier. “Laat ze elkaar maar afslachten” was wat gedacht, maar niet gezegd werd.

Nu is het anders. Oorlogen elders confronteren ons hier, tot op de vluchtelingen centra pal om de hoek bij ons eigen huis.

“Vluchtelingen Welkom” is een goed bedoelde, maar al te simpele leuze.

Wie en wat maken deze mensen tot vluchteling en waarom richten wij daar onze pijlen niet op?

Is het bombarderen van de Barbaarse ISIS is Irak en Syrië dan een niet-barbaarse, civiele daad?

Is dat de enige mogelijkheid? Is er niet genoeg bewezen dat hoogwaardige militaire wapens op veilige afstand vanuit de lucht afgevuurd, geen wondermiddel zijn en de situatie vaak van kwaad tot erger maken? (1)

Bommen-economie voor Syrië produceert ook “economische vluchtelingen” want ‘precisie-bombardementen’ die enkel de slechterikken raken bestaan enkel in de sprookjes van militaire woordvoerders.

De angst voor de ISLAMISERING van het  AVONDLAND (de ‘I’ en de ‘A’ uit de naam PEGIDA), klinkt als een slecht begrepen verwijzing naar het boek uit 1918 van Oswald Spengler (1880-1936), “Untergang des Abendlandes” (de Engelse titel luidde “The decline of the West”).

PEGIDA ziet zichzelf als bestaande uit ‘Europese Vaderlandslievenden (patriotten) die “onze cultuur” en “Westerse waarden” verdedigen tegen de ondergang van het Europese ‘avondland’ door aanstormende moslims, met een ongenoemd verwijzen naar de gemythologiseerde veldslagen van christenen tegen moslims bij Poitiers (732), de val van Constantinopel (1453) en het Beleg van Wenen door de Ottomanen in 1653.

Nu weer dreigen de ‘Westerse waarden’ (Geert Wilders spreekt graag of ‘judeo-chritelijke waarden’) ten onder te gaan volgens PEGIDA volgelingen, maar de goede lezer van Spengler’s visie uit 1918 weet dat deze het uiteindelijk had over duizendjarige rijken die opkomen als culturen, zich ontwikkelen tot civilisaties en uiteindelijk hun neergang beleven om plaats te maken voor nieuwe en andere civilisaties.

Hoewel Spengler een naar ‘rechts’ leunende man was, was hij zeker geen racist en geen aanhanger van de opkomende nieuwe orde onder Hitler. Alhoewel hij begrippen als ‘bloed’ en ‘ras’ gebruikt ziet hij oorspronkelijke etniciteit niet als een bepalende kwaliteit of bron voor diskwalificatie en discriminatie. Hij heeft het over hoe een bevolking met een diverse etnische oorsprong tot een (nieuwe) éénheid kan groeien. Hij pleit niet voor krampachtig behoud van toestanden en waarden uit het verleden, maar wijst op verschuivingen van civilisaties en hun wereldmacht in de toekomst.

Is dat wat PEGIDA aan visie ontbeert? Is het de angst voor het nog ongekende nieuwe wat hen verbindt, daar waar zij over de interpretatie van het verleden vrijwel zeker onderling van mening verschillen?

Een open debat met PEGIDA aanhangers over deze vragen is wat ons te doen staat, niet het spiegelbeeld te worden van hun valse verkettering.

Ook is het beter en goedkoper om Syrië te oefenen voor onze militairen… betere training is niet mogelijk met echte mensen, echte gebouwen, echte gevaren, echte kans op missers ook.

Of er automatisch uitklapbare bordjes in deze bommen zitten die ter plekke een markering achterlaten “Met dank aan Nederland” (بفضل هولندا.) weet ik niet, maar het zou een goed idee zijn, niet enkel voor de ISIS-leden die het overleefd hebben, maar ook voor de familieleden en de nabestaanden van degenen die colleteraal – per ongeluk – geraakt zijn. Het zou mooi zijn als ‘het wapen’ van de Tweede Kamer, met die leeuw en zijn bloedrode tong en nagels, alsook de bos met pijlen en het zwaard, goed zichtbaar in de puinhopen – die resten na een F16 aanval – komt te staan. De nabestaanden weten zo bij wie ze moeten zijn, nu er zoveel verschillende bommengooiers door het Syrische luchtruim klieven.  Misschien kan er een web-adres bij van diezelfde Tweede Kamer met een invulformulier om een schadeclaim te kunnen indienen.

Bomb-Branding heet zoiets. Op zijn minst kunnen mensen die haard & goed verloren hebben door de Nederlandse Luchtmacht dan ter compensatie met voorrang behandeld worden als zij als “economische vluchteling” aan het hekje van de Tuin van Holland (die weer diezelfde leeuw bewaakt wordt) aankloppen.

Exclusive mass-mobility for the affluent (a relative economic term, a lower middle class person can be “rich” elsewhere) always had it’s side-effects. The targetting of tourists is not an ISIS invention, it is a constant since the beginning of organised leisure travel. Mass-media combined with the new form of low-fare mass-travel do give it another dimension. What it lays bare as well is the economic structures of countries under attack, the problem of their (growing) dependancy on tourism, the social-economic division in the tourists countries themselves, those that profit, those that suffer. The impact on culture, habitat and environment geared to produce short-term profits.

We may well also consider reflecting on what makes up the demand & supply of the tourist industry. How dissatisfied are those mass-tourists with their local environment and life…. why it is that they like to play ‘king’ elsewhere, while abiding with their social status at home. Is the last thing not a deep structural meaning of the whole phenomenon of tourism, or is there also a genuine interest in how people live elseweher? The luxury “high security” (sic) ghettos of our days, which most of the mass-destination tourist resorts are, answer the last question.

If there is a vision on tourism of those who are trying to establish a new caliphate under the reign of ISIS-leaders is not clear to me, or it must be a special tour to the remaining debris of historical monuments blasted and looted by the troops of the new caliphate.

This brings to mind the observation that many of ‘historical monuments’ have been erected on the fundaments of preceding cultures, religions and reigns, with the reuse of older materials in newqer constructions. The academic term for this is ‘spolia’. Examples are the Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount in Jeruzalem (an almagate of building materials originating from times of Judaism, Roman rule, Crusaders ending up as a mosque under Umayyad Caliphs in the 7th century), the Cathedral and/or Mosque of Cordoba (starting off as a Roman temple for the god Janus, turned into an early Christian church by the Visigoths in the 6th century, changed into a great mosque by the exiled muslim rulers from damuscus the Umayyafs in the 8th century and becoming a christian church once more after teh Reconquista of Islam Spain in 1236). The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was at first a Greek Orthodox cathedral, until it’s reconstruction as a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II in 1453.

Now Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) with their declaration of a new caliphate see temselves treading in the footsteps of other great Muslim conquerors, one of the most famous being the beforementioned Sultan Mehmed II, who as far as destruction of historical monuments of infidels go, did the opposite… he just recycled a Byzantine christian cathadral into a mosque. Would that mean that The Hagia Sophia (now a Turkish state museum) will become the future destination for a new form of caiphate tourism of the ‘umah’ travelling en masse to Istanbul…. The excerpt form a recent article on how some Turks see their realtionship to ISIS explains this idea…

Al-Monitor, a well established Middle East news source, published an article on November the 14th 2014 under the header”Turks increasingly sympathetic to Islamic State”, from which I take the following quotation:

“The caliphate is not a recent issue for some Muslims in Turkey. A global Islamic organization, Hizb ut-Tahrir, which was established in 1953 and has branches in 50 countries, has been openly calling for a caliphate. In an interview with Al-Monitor, Mahmut Kar, the head of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s media relations in Turkey, explained in detail not only how his organization views IS’ decision to declare a caliphate but also its own struggle for a caliphate.

Kar said, “[Hizb ut-Tahrir] was established in 1960 in Turkey and when we started speaking about the caliphate in 1967 it was the first time the word had been brought back into Turkish public space since 1924. Once the idea of a caliphate was out in the open again, Islamist movements in line with the Muslim Brotherhood started emerging in Turkey.”

He (Mahmut Kar tj.) emphasized that for the “ordinary” Muslim and non-Muslim the association of the caliphate with IS has been detrimental. “As the world is leery of IS violence, the caliphate is now associated with blood,” Kar said. Even when ISIS blasts away the Haia Sophia because of its christian origins, it may well become a destination for another  – growing – part of tourist ondustry: ‘disaster toruism’ also called ‘dark tourism’. Apart from the Great Chinese Wall (which has the skeletons of generations of enslaved labourers in its fundaments) despotism draws great crowds, be it the Nazi KZ’s, the Gulag, or the Red Khmer execution fields….

 Roulette democracy in France once again…

… the departmental/region elections of December 2015 with it’s rise of the Front National in the first round and the media-demise of the same party in the second round, whereas the Front National gained 800.000 votes in the second round, and the Socialist Front gained just over 200.000 votes the second time.

What we see is a an election system that strives for a contest between two major parties, neglecting all other shades and colours of opinion. It is used for the presidential elections, as well as for de departmental ones. It dates back to what some call the ‘legal coup-d’état’ of the Fifth Republic by general De Gaulle in 1958. This changed a more full parliamentary system with a system with more central power executed by the president. It was triggered by the crisis France found itself in with the Algerian War and internal political strive, at the edge what some called ‘a civil war’. The aim of the Fifth Republic was ‘majority rule’, throwing out all ideas of more party coalitions, of proportional representation, of government by any form of consensus.

I will not explain here the vicissitudes of the so called binomial electoral system, it suffices to know that it has been implemented recently by countries trying to get out of a history of dictatorship like Chile and Poland. A system that may be of use during an initial period, but which – over longer time – hampers the very thing it claims to implement: parliamentary democracy.

This morning I was driven to make this info-graphic as I could not make good sense of all the comments, statistics and incomplete electoral maps I was presented with (both in French and English language newspapers).

On my mind was the first round of these elections – that also served as a test of the popularity or unpopularity of the sitting government of the ‘socialists party’ lead by François Hollande. As was to be expected the first round saw a great gain of the non-governing opposition under Marie Le Pen, her niece and some even more far right parties associated.

Next was a week of state propaganda against the Front Nationale… even while this party (if we like it or not) became in the first round the third political force in the country, nearing the socialist bloc in number of individual votes. Le Pen was not even invited to sit at the desk of the national/state television news after her success (imagine the reversed situation…). Everything was mobilised during one week to prepare for the second round with plenty of (state) media-space for the anti Le Pen camp and see, the Front Nationale did not loose votes, they gained 800.000 or so. Now the bad surprise of this semi-dictatorial system of binomial elections made it that the Front National (as a third political force in France) did not come back in any of the combined-departments/regions. The ‘bi’ polar system eliminates major players on the field.

What to think about such a system? What about the electoral force… how they can have any direct influence in such an abominable system?

It suffices to check out who did give their mandate for this new political departmental region constellation. It appears that roughly 50% of the electorate did NOT vote and half a million in the first round and three quarter of a million in the second round decided to give a blank vote.

So is all this ‘representational government’? It is not. Even when one dislikes or abhores the Front Nationale, one should keep up minimal standards of democratic respect for those playing in the election games.

Now the rules of the election games’ themselves should cone up for scrutiny. As it is now with the binomial system (*)  I give it the name:

ROULETTE DEMOCRACY — rien ne va plus.

A SYRIAN SEVASTOPOL?
Allied Forces including France and soon Britain (again) together with Turkey on a battlefield not far from the southern border of what became Russian territory by annexation in by the end of the 18th century: the Crimea.

The downing of a Russian airplane by the Turkish today may be seen as a step toward another Russian heroic stand a new Sevastopol?
Russians defending what all imperial nations like to call the mother or fatherland. Thus in the 19th century the French, British, Ottomans and Sardinians laid a siege to Sevastopol in the years 1854-55, so did the troops of the Third Reich in 1941-42. In both cases the Russian troops supported by most of – except the authochton Crimean Tartars – the local population, held heroically out for a long time, in the end losing these prolonged and murderous battles. Sevastopol thus became a symbol of Russians defending their values from Tsarist led Orthodox Christianism to Bolshevist led nationalism and beyond, with the new mix of Russion nationalism, corporate state system and revived Orthodox Church values under Putin.

The Crimean War saw the unholy alliance of Western European empires with the Ottoman Empire against what they saw as ‘a threat of Tsarist Orthodox Christian Russia. The Middle East War of today again has such an alliance in the form of NATO with the new Ottomans, the last under the new strong man of Turkey Erdogan, shooting down a Russian war plane.

In Syria, the Russian naval base at Tartus leased from the (socialist) Syrian Ba’at party of the Assad dynasty since 1971. It is very close to Turkey. It gives Russia a free access to the whole of the Mediterranean waters, without being forced to go through the Turkish controlled Bosporus.

EU/USA and NATO have been destabilising the Southern part of Russia by discarding the Cold War entente for a Hot War future scenario. Russian’s long involvement in Syria is strategic. So is it’s actual alliance with the Assad regime. The downing of a Russian war plane (over Turkish territory) is a step toward an unwanted war, that reminds of the disasters of the Crimean War in the mid of the 19th century.
Historic battles lost tend to become mythical references of nationalist history.
There was a lack of any anti-warmongers movement during the Crimean War of the 19th century, even when many Russians, Turks, Brits and Frenchmen, African troops, died in battle and of disease.
We seem to have very little real size opposition against what I like to call from now on THE MIDDLE EAST WAR… time to change that.

dedicated to all who think that aerial bombardment is the right answer to ISIS terrorism

Holy lands and Jerusalems have multiplied over millennia and the urge to go out conquer and subject them has not diminished.

This is the ‘appartement de repli’ (safe house) of a group of terrorists linked to the Paris attacks besieged on November the 18th by a police force of over one hundred.
A large scale picture, taken at night, of a corner house of Rue du Corbillon and Rue de la République in Saint-Denis, Paris metropolitan area, published in the Washington Post (printed edition and on their web-site).
Why?

Because alleged terrorists who might relate to the horrendous attacks in Paris on friday the 13th of November had hidden themselves in this building so a spokesman for the French justice system told the press after a siege of over one hour, starting at four o’clock in the morning.

Would a picture of such a downtrodden sad housing facade ever have reached the front pages of the world press if it was not for this spectacular incident? It would not.

We see four floors of the facade of the dilapidated house with flood lights directed at it. Some windows have lights on, others are dark. on the third visible floor the the last window at the right is dark and the window panes are gone, the next one has some lights on showing us a ravage with what seems to be of a smashed ceiling. The outer walls around these two windows are pocked by the impact of bullets or other projectiles.

What happened inside? What we are told is – as mostly in such cases – partial and contradictory (there was mentioning in an official statement of a woman with a bomb-belt that had exploded herself, which was later retracted by the same source). (1)
We know, even can hear and see it on amateur videos posted on Youtube, that not less than 5000 rounds of shots were fired. How many by the assailed persons in the building and how many by the police, we do not know. The traces left on the wall show more than just bullets from a pistol.

How come that these terrorists sought refuge in such a non-strategic bastion, as this corner house? Four satellite dishes can be counted in the picture, maybe more that fell down during the exchange of fire explosives. Which satellite they were pointed at, to which stations they tuned? Are houses with such a disk inhabited by people who have direct linkages to regions of the world that can not be accessed by regular cable radio & television systems? Living ‘here’ physically and living ‘there’ electronically at the same time.

Are we not all doing that in our saturated electronic environment by means of the internet? One does perceive sometimes city areas where such satellite dishes have grown into a forest of information reflectors, also indicating a neighbourhood with many recent migrants. Is that due to the lack of normal public access to television stations from home countries of big part of the (former migrant) population? We may need to reconsider the content management of our public television networks, to give more space to those with a migrant background, instead of raging about “needed integration.” That would be a deep structural change needed in our society, to make these satellite-dish forests redundant. When we non-migrant integrate more that would send a positive message.

We see several windows open, some show parts of a staircase. Is it to air the corridors from battle gasses pumped in?
Imagine the fear of the neighbours, who most probably had no knowledge of one of the apartments used as a safe-house for terrorists. On what information did the police act? Consider the bad chance of a mistake made in intelligence gathering.

Now what kind of terrorists are this who in their flight end up in such an apartment block? Is that proof of a high-level international network? It seems all very clumsy to me. Is this clumsiness, this lack of professional conspiracy to commit violence part of a larger strategy? (2)

I mean that someone clever has come to the insight that building a whole network – even by using a system of dispersed secret cells who do not know about each other – is an outdated concept. It is sufficient to pass on a general call to commit violent acts on non precise targets at no precise moments in time. Basing this method on the fact that it is not to difficult to get access to weapons and explosives, that some explosives can even be produced in a home laboratory or acquired indirectly through contacts within the building or mining industry (dynamite or similar type of explosives).

It may well be the case and that explains the great fear that did strike the conglomerate of state security systems. This combination of destructive acts based on a willingness for self-destruction do not fit the routines, strategies and tactics of state security organisations, of regular police control and all that comes with it.

A Washington Post article of November the 21. quotes an anti-terrorism specialist who sees it different:

“For such an attack, involving so many people, it must have been decided near the highest level,” said Claude Moniquet, a former French intelligence official who heads the European Strategic Intelligence and Security Center. The Islamic State’s military operation, whose senior leaders include numerous former military officials from Iraq, “would never let someone below them direct a strategic operation.”

It is a known fact that officials tend to see all that what is a threat to the reigning system as a mirror image of the system they are part of, the system they believe in. Hence this ‘top down vision’ of Claude Moniquet. He sees a vertical line of command directly from ISIS in Syria. This analysis also supports the ‘revenge aerial bombardments’ that are presented to us as ‘legal self-defence’ targets (in spite of the fact that according to international law and the ‘charter’ (chapter 7) of the United Nations these bombings are not-legal).

I do not claim that my view of the danger of the unpredictability of ‘grass root terrorism’ is correct in this particular case, but the opposite can not be proven either. The amateur and clumsiness aspect can be supported by the cases of the shooting on French army personal and Jewish civilians in Toulouse and Montauban in 2012 (by Mohammed Merah) and the attacks on the Jewish Historical Museum in Brussels in 2014 (by Mehdi Nemmouche), remain open to multiple interpretations and ambiguity, ranging from ‘jihadism’ and ‘anti-semitism’ to ‘tribalism’ and ‘insanity’.

Consider also an article in Le Monde about the same siege in Saint Denis of November 18., concluding:

“…rudimentary logistics with neither a safe-house nor a support provider: one seems here to be far away from classical urban warfare.” (2)

The walls of this apartment building must have heard enough during the few days or hours when this group of terrorists stayed there. (We may say that they were not longer ‘alleged terrorists’, as they did fire back to the police, there was an explosion, though we can not know for sure (yet) what they had done before or were really planning to do). A justice spokesman has told the press an act on Charles de Gaulle Airport was on their agenda.

What else could these walls tell? What about the regular lives of all those living around there? What about the person who let these terrorist group in, what did he/she know? This last thing we might get to know soon. It always takes several days more than the ‘latest news’ to be sufficiently informed on such matters.

There is a pattern in the social strata of this new generation of terrorists. This means that there is also a pattern in the habitat where these people – who so easily sacrifice the lives of others and their own – live. When I have understood it well the places where they were born, lived and died are identical in social status. (3) In the case of the ‘safe-house’ of Saint Denis that house failed its function utterly.

What sadness to consider while at the same time being abhorred by the savage nature of the terrorist attacks related to this group.

I focus now on this black hole where was once a window, in the bullet puckered and cracked wall. Imagine the last thoughts of those been killed in this battle. Was there anything left of ‘the cause’ for which they had chosen to fight? Or had their choice to put their own life at risk, taken over as ‘a cause’ in itself? These questions remain open.

There is failure in understanding these wasted lives. It all ends in the black hole of what once was a window on the world from a house, in a street, in the Parisian suburb Saint Denis, however inglorious this direct view, there was a wide world of other opportunities beyond, which have now all vanished in this black hole.

More sensational press agencies and news channels did make up their fantasy of a young ‘kamikaze woman’ like in the Daily Mirror with this long summing up header:

• Screamed ‘Help me!’ before blast in which her head flew through window
• She was described by friends as an ‘extrovert’, and booze-loving party girl
• Neighbour said she smoked and ‘went around with lots of different guys’
• Her nickname was ‘The Cowgirl’ as she liked to wear big cowboy hats

Nederland vocht al eens een oorlog tegen moslim-opstandelingen in den Oost…. tijdens de bloedige Atjeh-oorlogen op het einde van de 19e tot aan het begin van de 20e eeuw. Echter, bij De Volkskrant ontbreekt – zoals zo vaak – ieder historisch besef en zij legt haar lezers middels een enkel druk op een web-site knopje de vraag voor of Nederland ditmaal ook weer opstandige moslims dient te bombarderen.

Enkel al het stellen van de vraag binnen een dagenlange buiten-proportionele overreactie van de media op de – overigens gruwelijke – moordaanslag in Parijs. Ik noem het reduceren tot een simpele Ja/Nee vraag over het al dan gewenst zijn van een een oorlogshandeling buiten enig mandaat van de Verenigde Naties, niets meer en minder dan OORLOGSHETZERIJ.

Was Van Heutsz ooit niet onze ‘nationale held’? Hoe lang duurde het totdat Provo symbolisch een stukje van zijn monument in Amsterdam Zuid opblies?

Hoe lang duurde het dat op de Oosterbegraafplaats in Amsterdam de praaltombe van Van Heutsz die direct bij de uitgang van de Aula aldaar geplaatst was, verwijderd werd? Langzamerhand werden wij ons bewust van ons kwalijk koloniaal verleden.

En nu opnieuw in gevechtstuniek, niet met snelvuurgeweren en kanonnen maar dan hoog boven bewoonde gebieden, niet meer met de laarzen in het veld, gebieden die zo tot slachtveld gemaakt worden met bommen en raketten uit vliegtuigen? Wie worden er geraakt? Wat wordt er kapot gemaakt in Syrië? Sinds wanneer los je een groot en complex langlopend conflict op met luchtbombardementen?

Heeft zich iemand bij die krant zich rekenschap gegeven van hoe kwalijk deze mini-enquete is?

Moesten ooit niet die woeste en bloedzuchtige Atjehers een kopje kleiner gemaakt worden. Viel die koloniale oorlog niet onder de leuze “Daar werd iets groots verricht”?

Gaan wij dat nu weer in het ietsje minder Verre oosten, in het Midden Oosten herhalen?

we should be inquisitive always about aerial bombardments, there is hardly such thing as a pin pointed correct targeting without any collateral damage or victims… for a collateral victim of a so called ‘justified’ aerial attack it does not make any difference if the bomb was launched by the Assad troops, one of the opposing fractions, ISIS, the French. the Brit of the USA air force. The battlefield almost never is a separate spatial entity… it is part of human habitat. And… even when an ISIS stronghold has been hit, what about people around it, maybe family, kids, elderly… and in the end, when one is serious about a humanitarian stance, even the lives of ISIS soldiers do count…

ALJAZEERA of 17/11/2015 had this comment on the aerial bombing of Raqqa, showing how problematic aerial bombing always is. Locals need to fear all those who claim to be fighting there for the ‘right cause’:

‘Raqqa is devastated’ The Syrian activist in Raqqa said that in the past few days Russian air strikes had caused the most destruction. “Last week Russian air strikes destroyed one of the main bridges in the city in addition to the national hospital. Most hospitals in the city have been destroyed in Raqqa,” he said. “Russian air strikes have resulted in so much destruction. If these countries want to bomb the heartland of ISIL, they could have, but they still have not targeted the group’s most important bases. “This is what we do not understand. The targets bombed by French warplanes were mostly abandoned by ISIL fighters. French jets pound ISIL targets in Raqqa “The US, Russia and France are all bombing Syria. How many more countries want to bomb us? “Raqqa is devastated. Raqqa has endured the unbearable and we live in fear under ISIL’s dictatorship. “A lot of people fled the the city. EIFFEL-TOWER & TRI-COLORE CAN BE NO SYMBOLS OF PEACE

I see popping up on Facebook and other social media this emotionalisation and sentimentalisation of a gruesome act, with a symbolism (the Eiffel-tower made the centre of the ‘peace symbol’) that prooves that those who make such a – well intended – gesture, understand neither the actual nor the historical meaning of the symbols they use.

The Eiffeltower was made as a commemoration of the ‘Centenaire of the French Revolution’ combined with a World Fair in Paris. It stood for the colonial and imperial France of that time with it’s scramble for colonies in Asia and Africa. It is anything but a symbol of peace.

Using this symbol seems also to deny the reality that the French governments (both Sarkozy and Hollande) that engaged in recent conflicts from Libya tot Syria and in African countries that belong to it’s old colonial empire, has seen no mass peace protests in the streets from the population against them, calling for other means than just advanced weapon systems to help solving conflicts. Also it seems to me that people using this new combined symbol are not aware of the aggressive weapon export role of France, showcasing their newest products on the military intervention battlefields of Africa and the Middle East (Dassault selling a whole bunch of Rafale fighter jets to Qatar recently, or Egypt buyingFrench Mistral helicopter-deck warships).
The Eiffel-tower stands both for Paris and for France as a symbol… for France as a state, France as a world-power, not for France as a nation of peace, or France as a “peace-maker”, or the French nation as a nation of victims… also just the French tri-colore as a symbolic gesture after the murderous attack, fails as well to have a critical differentiation between citizens and “their” government.
